What is the HSN code list?

For Goods, it is the HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature). And for Services, this system is called SAC (Servicing Accounting Code) Code System.

HSN coding has brought systematic classification of goods all over the world. 

It is a 6-digit uniform code that classifies 5000+ products and is accepted worldwide.

However, for better identification of goods, India and a few other countries use eight-digit codes for deeper classification.

However, it is mandatory to mention HSN Code on the invoice. 

The following individuals need to display the HSN Code on the invoice as per Notification No. 12/2017 – Central Tax dated 28th June 2017:

  • Businesses having less than Rs.1.5 crores annual turnover in the preceding financial year will not be required to display HSN Code.
  • Businesses having Rs.1.5 crores to Rs.5 crores annual turnover in the preceding financial year will be required to display the first two-digit (Chapter) of the HSN code.
  • Businesses having more than Rs.5 crore as annual turnover in the preceding financial year should display the first two-digit (Chapter) and chapter heading of the HSN code.

Who can use 4 digit HSN code?

HSN codes of 4 digits will be required for taxpayers with a turnover of more than Rs. 5 crores in the preceding financial year. 

What is a 4-digit and 6-digit HSN code?

A 4-digit HSN code is mandatory for taxpayers in the preceding financial year who are having a turnover of up to Rs. 5 crores. 

However, a 6-digit HSN code is mandatory for turnover above 5 crores and it is compulsory to mention in GSTR-1 w.e.f. 1st August 2022.

What is 8 digit HSN code?

The first two digits represent the chapter number, the next two digits represent the heading number, the next two digits constitute the subheading, and the last two digits represent the tariff items. 

How to add HSN code in GST portal?

Steps to add HSN Code in GST Portal:

1: Login to the GST portal.

2: Go to Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-core fields.

3: Click on the ‘Goods and Services’. Click on goods.

4: Search for the relevant HSN chapter by entering the HSN code or name of the item.

5: Click on ‘Save and continue’. Click on the ‘Save’ button.

6: Complete the verification and submit via DSC or EVC.

Is GSTR-1 compulsory for HSN?

Yes, GSTR 1 form is mandatory to be filed. 

The GSTR-1 form is nothing but the return of reporting about your business. 

This is filed by the normally registered taxpayers either once a month or quarterly. 

Is HSN mandatory for small businesses?

Yes, businesses with total revenue of up to 5 crores must include an HSN summary with a four-digit HSN number in their GSTR-1 form.

Also, HSN is compulsory for taxpayers whose turnover is more than Rs. 5 crores in the preceding financial year.

Is HSN mandatory for B2C sales?

No, HSN is not mandatory for B2C sales.

Businesses with a turnover less than or equal to Rs. 5 crores must use a 4-digit HSN code for all the B2B invoices. 

However, for B2C invoices this reporting is optional. 

Is 4 digit HSN code valid?

Yes, the 4-digit HSN code is valid and is available for taxpayers w.e.f. 1st August 2022. 

Furthermore, taxpayers are required to report a minimum of 4 digits or 6 digits of the HSN Code in Table 12 of GSTR-1 on the basis of their Aggregate Annual Turnover (AATO) in the preceding Financial Year.

Who can use 6 digit HSN code?

6-digit HSN codes are used by businesses with turnover above 5 crores on the GST Portal,  w.e.f. 1st August 2022.
