In most cases, tax is calculated on three separate lines, so the customer can see what is being charged and the tax amount as separate line items. In this example, the total net price is entered in cell C8 (cell B8 contains the word “net price”).

Net price: $24.00 (C8)

Tax: (C9)

Total amount: (C10)

Click cell C9 and enter the formula to multiply the net price in cell C8 by the tax rate. =C8*0.05 is a 5% tax. If the tax rate is 8%, enter =C8*0.08.

Press Enter to display the sales tax amount in the selected cell. A rate of 5% indicates $1.20. To calculate the total amount, simply add the amounts in cells C8 and C9. In Excel, this is done with the SUM formula.

Enter the following formula in cell C10.

=SUM(C8:C9)

Press Enter to see the total price with tax added to the net price. In this example, the tax rate is 5% and the total price is $25.20.
