    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

    1. Can I use my GST certificate as proof while applying for professional tax registration in Karnataka?

If you are registered under GST, your GST certificate is accepted as valid proof of business during professional tax registration. It also helps autofill business details in the e-Prerana portal.

    2. Do I still need to pay professional tax if I close my business?

If your business has closed or become non-operational, you must surrender your PT registration and file a final return. Until this is done, the liability to pay professional tax may continue, and penalties may apply for non-filing.

    3. Is a digital signature mandatory for professional tax filing in Karnataka?

Digital signatures are not mandatory for filing professional tax returns on the Karnataka e-Prerana portal. However, it is advisable to retain soft copies of challans and returns for audit or compliance purposes.

    4. How can I update or correct details in my professional tax registration?

Log in to your account on the e-Prerana portal and select the ‘Amendment’ or ‘Edit Registration’ option. You can update key details such as address, number of employees, or contact information.

    5. Can I make professional tax payments for multiple business branches under one login?

Each branch or location must have a separate PT Registration Certificate (PTRC), and professional tax payments must be made individually using branch-specific login credentials.

    6. What if I miss filing a monthly return, can I file it later with the next one?

Yes, previous returns can be filed later. However, each month’s return must be filed separately, and late filing will attract penalties and interest. Returns cannot be clubbed into a single filing.

    7. How can I track the status of my PT application or return?

You can track the status of your application or return by logging into the portal and selecting ‘Application Status’ or ‘Track Return Status’ from the e-Prerana dashboard.

    8. Are freelancers or consultants working from home required to register for professional tax?

Yes. Freelancers, consultants, or any self-employed individuals earning more than ₹25,000 per month are required to enroll under PTEC, even if working remotely or from home.

    9. Is there a grace period for new businesses to register for professional tax?

No official grace period is provided. Businesses must complete PT registration within 30 days of becoming liable, whether due to hiring employees or exceeding the income threshold.

    10. Can I claim a refund for excess professional tax paid?

Yes. In case of overpayment due to error or duplication, you may apply for a refund or adjustment by submitting a formal request along with supporting documents to the jurisdictional PT officer. The refund process is manual and subject to approval.
